A stone is a record of the history of the earth and human. Its immutability and solidity are compared to longevity and immortality, so people in various cultures choose stones to create practical, long-term, cultural, cognitive, historical, mythological, religious and aesthetic value. That is why the origin, structure, historicity and artistic representation of stones are often analysed in search for the city’s historical and cultural identity. Šiauliai City does not have an old town, because the entire city centre was destroyed during the world wars. However, the remaining stone foundations and fragments of cobbled streets remind us of the past. Šiauliai sculptures tell us about the city’s cultural life.
This route provides an opportunity for people with visual impairments to learn about historical, art and cultural objects, which we usually learn from books or by watching them. Touching the stone artwork will allow people to “see” its exterior, and audio imaging will help to “see” larger objects. It is necessary for those people who cannot enjoy works of art to a certain disability (vision, reading).
Information for the route was prepared by Šiauliai County Povilas Višinskis Public Library implementing the project “Touch the exhibits with your hands! Searching for the identity of Šiauliai”. The project is partially financed by Šiauliai City Municipality.
