Legend about Akmenė

Tough tribal people called “Akmentikiai” used to live in Akmenė District. They were strong, and their willpower could even lift huge boulders from a distance. When the great glacier moved to their land, they did not leave it. The mythical tribal people blend in with the stones, turned into the field boulders and remained there forever. Akmenė and stone is an inseparable combination of words and a special meaning that reflects the identity of this land. Maybe that’s why the fun game “kūlsveidis” is played so enthusiastically only in Akmenė. In Samogitian, “stone” is called “kūlis”

Antanas Adomaitis is an artist, a great patriot of Samogitia and a lover of history. When Antanas slowly, within a long time “made the stone speak”, his works not only decorated Akmenė, but also spread widely outside the borders of Lithuania. Each Antanas’s works not only amazes with its beauty, but also reminds us that stone is much more than just a cold, inanimate object. It is a challenge that the artist chooses every day.

Information for the route was prepared by Akmenė Town Library named after Ona Šimaitė implementing the project “Touch the exhibits with your hands!”. The project is partially financed by the Lithuanian Council for Culture and Šiauliai City Municipality.
