It is believed that the first wooden chapel was built in 1523 (until 1597, it was appropriated by evangelical reformers). During the town’s fire in 1700, the church and all parsonage buildings burned down, but a new one was built in the same year. In 1838, the permission to build a new church was requested, but the Orthodox clerical authority did not express its opinion for 4 years, this way hindering to get the permission. The wooden church was built in 1842-1844 (design was made by architect Krasinskis). On April 13, 1863, priest Petkevičius read rebels’ proclamation in the church. In 1909-1914, the Lithuanian Catholic Teetotallers’ Society branch was operating. During World War I, the church was destroyed. In 1927-1933, the present brick church was built. It was consecrated by bishop Justinas Staugaitis on September 29, 1933. Canon Vaclovas Dambrauskas took care of the construction. During World War II, the church was considerably damaged. The destroyed tower was not rebuilt after the war. The church tower was rebuilt under the leadership of priest Julijonas Miškinis.
