Šiauliai city

The Rūdė stream was first mentioned in 1863, when the officer Nikolayev, describing his crusade against rebels, mentioned that he had passed the bridge over the Rūdė stream.

Šiauliai used to be devastated by plagues, various epidemics, fires. Although the city was located at the crossroad of important roads, no big river flowed through it. The Rūdė stream partially satisfied water needs of the city. Eventually the rivulet hid under the ground and continued flowing along the street, which appropriated its name.

The small fountain was built in 1986, when the city was being decorated for its 750 anniversary.

The small four-part polished granite dome marks the depression on Vilniaus Street, under which the Rūdė rivulet, squeezed in underground pipes, keeps gushing. It took a lot of effort to curb this fast-flowing stream so that we can now see the long-lasting fountain with strange ancient carvings on the sides. These carved drawings depict the rower and the archer.

The name of the stream says that the stream was brown, that is why the dome is made of brown granite. This small fountain shows the lowest location of the boulevard.
