In 2020, during the reconstruction of Aušros Avenue in Šiauliai, fragments of the interwar pavement were uncovered. The pavement of undressed, round field stones was laid circa 1934, when the reconstruction of Aušros Avenue took place at that time.
The streets were paved with stones already in tsarist times. After the restoration of Lithuania’s independence in 1918, there was a great lack of good roads. Therefore, the procedure for maintenance of state and municipal roads was established.
In 1928, about 56 percent of Šiauliai streets were paved. In the first decade of Lithuania’s independence, all streets were paved with round field stones. They were rough and irregular in shape. Later, especially the busiest streets of the city, were paved with dressed stones.
